Background

The Well’s Fall message series, led by Pastor Jason Parrish, is a multi-month teaching experience aimed at deepening attendees’ spiritual growth and personal reflection. To complement this series, the church sought to provide a thoughtfully designed journal that would serve as a meaningful, functional tool for engagement.

The Challenge

The challenge was to create a physical resource that aligned closely with the series’ thematic elements and visual identity, while also supporting attendees’ varied ways of interacting with the content. The journal needed to be both inspirational and practical, facilitating note-taking, reflection, and application over several months.

Approach

As lead designer, I developed a custom hardcover journal tailored to the series’ unique narrative and structure:

  • Thematic Design Integration
Crafted a visual identity for the journals that echoed the Fall message series’ core themes, ensuring consistency across both 2023 and 2024 editions.

  • Structured Content Layout
Organized the journal into sections reflecting the series outline, providing clearly defined spaces for notes, personal reflections, and guided prompts aligned with each teaching session.

  • Personalization & Resources
Included an introductory letter from Pastor Jason Parrish and curated resource pages to deepen users’ engagement with the teachings.

  • User Experience Focus
Emphasized clean, visually engaging layouts that encouraged regular journal use and fostered a sustained connection to the series over time.

Outcome

The custom journals became a valued companion for attendees, enhancing their ability to engage deeply with the Fall message series. By offering a dedicated, beautifully designed space for reflection and learning, the journals helped cultivate greater personal growth and sustained spiritual reflection throughout the duration of the teaching series.

This project not only reinforced The Well’s commitment to meaningful participant engagement but also demonstrated the power of thoughtfully designed physical materials in enriching spiritual transformation.
